Sand-coloured degus
| Last year at the fair
„Tier & Wir“ in Friedrichshafen/Germany, we met many animal lovers and had
interesting conversations. We were very surprised when we heard of “light”
degus, and first expected them to simply be a lighter brown than ours. We
were promised some photos, and the next day we met two sand-coloured degus
in person! The degus apparently come from the USA and there are no plans of breeding with them here. That’s probably best – the degus were exceptionally quiet, lay on our hands and barely moved. The ears showed slight scales, too. We would be happy if breeding in this direction didn’t even start in Germany. Those breeds are often related to inbreeding, and nobody really knows a lot about degu genetics. Also, other species are living proof of what intensive breeding of colour and other characteristics may create. |
